Essential Tax Deadlines for Small Businesses in January 2026

January 2026 stands as a critical month for small business tax preparation, with essential deadlines that business owners can't afford to overlook. By planning ahead, businesses can maintain compliance and avoid costly penalties by adhering to these key tax milestones.

January 15 - Employer’s Monthly Deposit Obligation

Employers must adhere to the monthly deposit schedule by January 15, ensuring they remit their Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes for December 2025. Nonpayroll withholding deposits are similarly due if following the monthly deposit rule. Remember, these employment tax deposits must be completed electronically unless your deposit liability is under $2,500, in which case you may remit the payment quarterly or annually alongside your return.

January 15 - Crucial Estimated Tax Payment for Farmers and Fishermen

Farmers and fishermen must pay estimated taxes for 2025 utilizing Form 1040-ES by January 15. If this deadline is missed, you must file your 2025 tax return and pay any dues by March 2, 2026, to sidestep estimated tax penalties.

Weekend & Holiday Extensions:

Should a due date coincide with a weekend or legal holiday, the deadline is automatically extended to the following business day that isn't a public holiday.
